Avalanche Warnings after record snow falls
The manager of the Surefoot boot shop in Val d'Isere got more than he bargained for on a quiet night in last week, when an avalanche broke in though the patio doors and pushed his bed across the room and against the wall.

Ski for less in the small French village with Olympic credentials
Kathleen Wyatt goes to Morillon with Peak Retreats (www.peakretreats.co.uk ). The village is home to Olympic Gold Medal skier Antoine Deneriaz and offers the charm of a small Alpine village (which is fully open in Summer too) but also gives cable car access to the piste areas of the Grande Massif. Consequently, prices are much cheaper. High snowfalls also mean you can ski down to the village at the end of the day.

The pound takes a tumble
Will Hide suggests some deals that will help mitigate the falling value of the Pound against the Euro. These include a package in Les Coches with Finlays and a weeks half board in Brides Les Bains with Peak Retreats (www.peakretreats.co.uk )which gives cable car access to some of the best skiing but is half the price of a similar package in Courchevel.

News in Brief - Alps Avalanche Warnings
Stephen Bleach
advises that many resorts in the southern Alps have posted category 4 (out of 5) avalanche warnings

Travel News
Tom Chessyre highlights the enormous snowfalls in the Alps this week (more than 2 metres in Val d'Isere - pictured oppsite) and says that there is a greatly increased threat of avalanches.
